The Walton County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) is calling on the community for support in their latest initiative, Art in the Park, an inspiring project aimed at enhancing public spaces while fostering creativity among local students. More than just a celebration of artistic talent, this initiative strengthens community engagement, promotes local pride and provides valuable scholarship opportunities for young artists.

This year’s Art in the Park will focus on two key locations:

Wee Care Park – The restroom building near the disc golf area will be transformed with murals themed around disc golf and soccer. This project will be a collaboration between Walton High School art teacher Chris Wolfer and his students, completing the final building mural at this site.

Choctaw Beach Park – A second restroom building will receive a creative makeover thanks to a partnership with Freeport High School art teacher Amy Rasz and her students.

Art in ParkStudents will submit artwork based on these themes, and approximately 20 top entries will be selected for sponsorship. Businesses and individuals who sponsor a $500 scholarship will have the opportunity to choose their favorite painting from the selected works. The goal is to secure at least eight sponsorships for both mural locations.

Once the murals are completed, scholarship funds will be processed through the school’s accounting system and held until the student graduates and enrolls in college courses. These funds will be used for tuition, books and other academic expenses, disbursed directly to the institution. Sponsors will also be recognized with their name displayed on a sign near the finished artwork, highlighting their commitment to community enrichment.

Beyond its artistic impact, this initiative serves a deeper purpose. Public art fosters a sense of ownership, enhances neighborhood safety and contributes to a welcoming environment. Research shows that well-maintained artistic spaces can reduce crime rates in previously neglected areas by encouraging social interaction and natural surveillance.

If you, your business or your community group would like to support this inspiring initiative, please reach out to Deputy Ted Toedte for more information on sponsorship opportunities and how you can make a difference.
