This year marked my first participation in the 37th annual Gate-to-Gate Memorial Day Run/Walk at Eglin Air Force Base—an unforgettable experience. The event started with a surprising twist as a mama bear and her three cubs decided to join us perched in a tree at Unity Park. The unexpected visitors led to a redesign of the area and a 20-minute delay. Still, their presence added a unique charm to the event as over 700 participants gathered to honor our fallen heroes. The sight of the bears captivated everyone, turning an already special day into an extraordinary one.
I had registered for the race months in advance, but fortune smiled when I won a complimentary entry at the Niceville Valparaiso Second Wednesday May breakfast. Sitting with Cole Randall from One Okaloosa, I gave him the free entry, and we met on race day. This camaraderie exemplifies the event’s spirit—bringing the community together in remembrance and celebration. It was heartwarming to see familiar faces, and you could sense how meaningful the event was.
Despite planning to run, I had to switch to walking on the day of the race. This change didn’t dampen my spirits; I tied for 25th place overall and secured 8th place in my division. Walking is in my future. The competitive yet commemorative nature of the event was evident, especially as three local women from Ft. Walton, Valparaiso and Niceville took the top overall walk times, showcasing the talent and dedication within our community. Among them was real estate agent and Councilwoman Cathy Alley, pictured with her trophy, embodying the spirit of achievement and honor the event celebrates.
The Gate-to-Gate Memorial Day Run/Walk is more than just a race; it’s a poignant tribute to those who have served and sacrificed for our country. Witnessing the collective effort and determination of the participants, from seasoned runners to first-time walkers like me, highlighted the profound respect and gratitude we all share for our military heroes. The atmosphere was filled with unity and purpose as we all moved forward to remember the fallen. Another heartwarming highlight was placing plastic poppy flowers at the All-Wars Memorial. The bears might have stolen the spotlight momentarily, but the true stars were the participants who came together to honor the legacy of our fallen soldiers.
The event was a powerful reminder of our community’s strength and resilience. It was an honor to be a part of such a meaningful tradition. I look forward to participating again next year, carrying the memories of this unique and inspiring experience. The Gate-to-Gate Memorial Day Run/Walk pays tribute to our heroes and strengthens our community’s bonds, reminding us of the importance of coming together in support and remembrance. God bless America!
